What does a Data Center HVAC Engineer do?

HVAC is a general term which stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. Unsurprisingly heating is not really an issue for Data Centres, so the focus is on cooling and humidity control.
If you have ever wondered why a data centre doesn’t overheat, even with thousands of servers running flat out, you can thank an HVAC technician.
It is the single most advertised role on the data centre job market right now, and there is a simple reason for that. Every rack of servers throws off heat, and if that heat is not removed constantly and reliably, equipment fails, uptime drops, and clients get very unhappy very quickly. HVAC technicians are the people who keep that from happening.
What the job actually involves
Day to day, an HVAC technician monitors, services and repairs the ventilation, air conditioning and cooling systems that keep a facility at the right temperature and humidity. In a data centre specifically, that usually means working with computer room air handlers, chillers, CRAC and CRAH units, and increasingly liquid cooling systems as racks get denser and hotter.
The work is hands on. You are testing airflow, checking refrigerant levels, diagnosing why a unit is cycling oddly, carrying out planned preventive maintenance, and responding fast when something trips in the middle of the night. Many roles involve being part of an on call rota, because cooling failures do not wait for office hours.
Why it matters so much right now
The scale of AI and cloud computing has pushed power density in racks to levels that were unthinkable a few years ago. That means cooling has become a genuine engineering challenge rather than an afterthought, and operators are hiring aggressively for technicians who understand both traditional HVAC and newer liquid cooling technology.
What you need to get in
Most employers ask for certification (which will vary depending on the country in question), hands on experience with commercial or industrial HVAC systems, and a willingness to work shifts. A background in refrigeration, controls or building management systems is a strong plus. Formal qualifications matter, but so does temperament: you need to stay calm and methodical when a critical unit fails and people are watching the clock.
Where it can take you
It is a genuinely good entry point into the wider data centre world. Plenty of critical facilities engineers and data centre operations managers started out with a spanner in hand fixing cooling units, and pay reflects the skill shortage, with strong hourly rates and often generous overtime.
