FCCN is the digital services unit of Portugal's Foundation for Science and Technology, established in 1986 to support the country's academic and research communities. The organisation operates through six technological pillars - connectivity, computing, collaboration, knowledge, security, and innovation - serving more than 600,000 students, researchers, and academics across Portugal's universities, research institutions, and schools.
The organisation manages RCTS, the national research and education network connecting institutions throughout Portugal, and pioneered significant infrastructure initiatives including PIX, an internet exchange created in 1995, and eduroam, the federated wireless roaming service that began operating in Portugal in 2002. FCCN contributes to international research networking communities through partnerships with GÉANT and other National Research and Education Networks worldwide.
FCCN develops and operates a suite of digital platforms serving its user base: NAU (online learning), Educast (video recording and publishing), B-ON (online knowledge library), and Filesender (secure file sharing). The organisation maintains a commitment to open source principles and practices across its technology stack and infrastructure operations.
