PURPOSE:
The Mechanical Engineer- Data Center Construction- supports the design, construction, and commissioning of data center facilities. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with mission-critical environments and is knowledgeable in mechanical systems supporting high-availability, high-density data centers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, review, and oversee installation of mechanical systems for data center facilities, including:
- HVAC, chilled water, and air-handling systems
- Cooling strategies (air-cooled, liquid-cooled, and hybrid systems)
- Plumbing, drainage, and fire protection systems
- Support mechanical system layouts in coordination with architectural, structural, and electrical teams
- Review construction drawings, specifications, and submittals for compliance with project requirements and codes
- Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and commissioning agents during construction and startup
- Perform site inspections to ensure quality, safety, and adherence to design intent
- Support commissioning, functional testing, and turnover of mechanical systems
- Participate in risk assessments, value engineering, and constructability reviews
- Troubleshoot mechanical system issues during construction and early operation phases
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements (ASHRAE, NFPA, local building codes)
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- 5+ years of experience in building construction, with a strong focus on data centers or mission-critical facilities
- Proven experience with HVAC and cooling systems for high-density server environments
- Familiarity with redundancy concepts (N, N+1, 2N) and reliability requirements
- Experience working on active or brownfield data center sites is a plus
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical specifications
- Strong coordination and communication skills with multidisciplinary teams
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
- Ability to work in fast-paced, schedule-driven construction environments
- Attention to detail with a strong focus on quality and reliability
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure
- Experience with commissioning processes and integrated systems testing
- Knowledge of energy efficiency strategies and sustainability initiatives
- Familiarity with BIM / Revit and mechanical modeling tools
- Experience working with hyperscale or colocation data center projects
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Work is normally performed in an office, laboratory, manufacturing floor, or machine shop setting where physical work includes, but is not limited to sitting, standing, reaching, kneeling, bending, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
- Must be able to understand and comply with all relevant safety practices.
