Founded in 1879, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is Arkansas' only health sciences university and operates as a comprehensive statewide health system. It provides health care, education, and research across its main campus in Little Rock and nine regional campuses throughout the state. The institution employs over 12,000 people, making it Arkansas' largest public employer.
UAMS educates more than 3,400 students, supported by nearly 2,200 faculty members and over 900 medical residents and fellows. Its clinical affiliates include Arkansas Children's Hospital and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, with its Myeloma Center having treated nearly 17,000 patients globally.
The university maintains a significant research enterprise, bringing in over $233 million in research funding and ranking in the top 14 percent of U.S. institutions for federal research grants. In fiscal year 2024, the system recorded over 135,000 outpatient visits.
