Virginia's largest higher education institution, the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), operates a network of 23 community colleges across the state. Established in 1966 and governed by a 15-member State Board appointed by the Governor, it provides accessible pathways to associate degrees, professional certificates, and workforce training, serving more than 252,000 students annually.
The system administers several key programs designed to align education with local employment needs. The FastForward initiative provides short-term job training, while the G3 program offers tuition assistance to students from families with incomes under $100,000. Additionally, the Credits2Careers portal awards academic credit for military service and prior professional certifications.
With its central office located in Richmond and a Shared Services Center in Daleville, the VCCS plays a significant role in the state's workforce pipeline. A reported 81% of its graduates remain in their local communities after completing their studies, contributing to regional economic development. The Transfer Virginia portal further supports student progression by facilitating transitions to four-year institutions.
